OGHA NYSC COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT EVENT held on May 9 - May 11, 2018 was in the words of hundreds, "A rousing success."
Over 500 people attended the Helping Hands Community Event in Abuekata, Ogun State. The Helping Hands Community Event's success is attributed to Chairman/President Isaac Precious Ikedi, Grace Atulaegwu, Okeke Rosemary Onyinyeokeke along with dozens of NYSC Corps members, sponsors and project manager. The theme of this outreach event is “Helping Hands, Reconstructing, Reconciling and Rebuilding” and focuses on reaching out to the poor and indigent, and our youth who need medical information, education and services.
The three day event was held in Abueketa, Nigeria from May 9 - May 11, 2018. During the event various speakers provided awareness in their areas of specialty. Doctors and other medical providers provided information and services in areas of high blood pressure, HIV and other medical problems facing society. The Corp members felt it was important to include medical information and services into the event because Aacording to Folashade Ogunsola, a professor of medicine and chairman of the Association of Colleges of Medicine of Nigeria, yet in our motherland, only about 35,000 doctors attend to the country’s 173 million citizens. The World Health Organization (WHO), the UN body responsible for promoting international public health, puts Nigeria’s doctor-to-population ratio at 0.3 per 1,000 persons, which is grossly inadequate. To adequately serve the people, the country needs at least 237,000 doctors. Africa bears “more than 24% of the global burden of disease but has access to only 3% of health workers and less than 1% of the world’s financial resources,” according to WHO.
Local businesses participated by showing their products and services and by conducting skill aquisition training to community members who wanted to learn a new skill that could help them to one day become business owners.Skilled aquisition is important to create a society of youths who believe that smart hard work can lead to success and self sufficiency. Numerous vendors attended the event to provide training to community members.
The professional project management provided by RS Rich Enterprises, Inc. added to the event being concluded on time and under budget. Sponsors provided guidance and financial support for the event. Sponsors in attendance were:
